On June 10, 2022, World Art Nouveau Day (WAND) celebrates the artistic movement from the early 20th century. This is the occasion to discover sublime Art Nouveau buildings in Paris and learn more about its features thanks to exceptional entertainments.
Celebrated on June 10, 2022, World Art Nouveau Day pays tribute to master of this artistic movement that thrived from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Art Nouveau is characterized by the inclusion of nature-inspired ornamentations such as trees, flowers, insects or animals and even arabesques. The movement – that reaches its climax circa 1905 – then transformed into Art Décor with a more geometric style. In Paris, there are many places and buildings built during the Art Nouveau artistry era and that you can visit on this exceptional day.
World Art Nouveau Day program:
On Saturday June 11 and Sunday 12, 2022, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs hosts an Art Nouveau weekend. On the occasion, enjoy a free guided tour of the Art Nouveau collections with your family, along with a contest for kids so they can win a “vegetable alphabet” workshop to put on the shoes of the greatest artists of the movement!
On the occasion of the day, the IESA Arts and Culture School hosts a free conference at 2 p.m., open to all and themed on “Eugène Grasset’s botanic”, including an analysis mixing history of art and sciences around the main figure of the Art Nouveau movement.

- The Guimard metro stations
Art Nouveau was at its climax when the Paris metro opened, 116 years ago. It is an architect from Lyon, Hector Guimard, who also created the Castel Béranger, who will conceive some of the doors to the metro. Since then, many of them unfortunately disappeared, but there are still 86 out of 141 still up you can admire at the Porte Dauphine, Saint-Michel, Cité, Abbesses, Ternes and Pigalle stations.
There are two types, with and without a roof, but for the one with a fan-shaped awning, there is only the entrance to Porte Dauphine left, with a “dragonfly design”. As for the roof-less entrances, the word “Métropolitain” is held between two lamps adorned with the stem of a plant. The orange lamps at the top are surrounded by leaves. These doors became historic monument in 1978, preventing any other destructions.
In 1898, Hector Guimard builds the Castel Béranger, a building in the 16th arrondissement. This is a whole work of art, considered as the very founding monument of the movement in France, that will meet huge success in the city. Thanks to this building, Guimard is given the award for most beautiful façade in the city of Paris, now listed as historic monument. Although this is a private property that cannot be visited, the outdoor façade, the gate and beautiful balconies are worth it!
