Return to Monkey Island director defends its art style

Ron Gilbert, the director of the upcoming Return to Monkey Island, has defended the game’s art style from criticism.

Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games announced the game last month. It is a sequel to Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

Since then, some fans have criticised the game’s art direction, which Rex Crowle (Knights and Bikes, Tearaway) is leading. The visuals are not pixelated, as were those of the originals. Instead they appear hand-drawn and crisp.

In a blog post, Gilbert said:

“Return to Monkey Island may not be the art style you wanted or were expecting but it’s the art style I wanted.”

Speaking of Crowle’s involvement with project, he said:

“Rex is an amazing creative force and we have a team of incredible artists, animators, sound designers, programmers, and testers all pouring their souls into this game and it’s beautiful to see, play, and listen to.”

In other Monkey Island-related news, the new game will not disrupt the series’ timeline. “We’re not saying any of those things didn’t happen, we don’t talk down to them at all,” Gilbert said. “We embrace a lot of the things we liked in those games. So we were very, very careful about that.”
